Installing Caldera DR-DOS from a Network Drive

The installation program for Caldera DR-DOS is INSTALL. The way in which you start INSTALL depends on how you obtained the DR-DOS files and whether or not you are installing on a computer that is already running Windows 95.

Once started, the installation proceeds automatically. To get help on INSTALL, press F1. You can quit the INSTALL program at any time by pressing ALT X.

Caldera DR-DOS can be installed in a number of ways:

From the DR-DOS CD-ROM. If you have a CD-ROM drive, you can install straight from the CD-ROM - which is a bootable CD-ROM.
From a diskette set. If you do not have a CD-ROM drive on your computer, you can create a diskette set using another computer that does. Use MAKEDISK to create the floppy diskette set and install using these diskettes.
From a network drive. The DR-DOS files can be copied to a drive from CD-ROM or diskette to a networked drive. Once on this drive, any user who can access this drive can then run INSTALL.

This chapter describes all these options, explains how to start the installation program INSTALL.EXE and the installation procedure.

Note: Before you install this operating system, if you already have DOS running on your machine, you may want to use your existing backup command to back up all the information on your hard disk.

Starting INSTALL

If you are using a DOS operating system, even with Windows 3.x, you can start your computer in the normal way and install Caldera DR-DOS. If you are running Windows 95, the situation is different.

Note: DR-DOS can co-exist with Windows 95. However, it cannot be installed with Windows 95 running: you must start your computer in MS-DOS mode.

DR-DOS cannot be installed in the same disk partition as a FAT32 drive. If you are unsure, ask your PC manufacturer.

Follow the instructions in the appropriate section.

Installing Caldera DR-DOS from the CD-ROM

The Caldera DR-DOS CD-ROM is a bootable CD-ROM. If your computer supports this, insert the CD-ROM in the drive and restart your computer. (You may need to change the CMOS setup to do this.) When it has rebooted from the CD-ROM, the installation program is started automatically. A menu is displayed showing the options you have.

If your computer does not support a bootable CD-ROM, follow the instructions under the appropriate heading:

To install from CD-ROM on a DOS/Windows 3.x computer:

1. Exit Windows, if it is running.

2. Load the CD-ROM.

3. If necessary, change to the CD-ROM drive.

4. Change to the DRDOS directory.

5. Type INSTALL Enter.

6. Select the option to install DR-DOS.

To install from CD-ROM on a Windows 95 computer:

To install from CD-ROM on a Windows 95 computer, you must be in a DOS mode.

1. Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode.

2. Load the CD-ROM.

3. If necessary, change to the CD-ROM drive.

4. Change to the DRDOS directory.

5. Type INSTALL Enter.

6. Select the option to install DR-DOS.

If you cannot access the CD-ROM drive when the computer is in DOS mode, you do not have the appropriate driver. Follow the instructions in the next section.

To install on a Windows 95 computer with no DOS-based CD-ROM driver:

1. With Windows 95 running, copy the files from the DRDOS directory on the CD-ROM to a directory on your hard disk.

2. Restart your computer in MS-DOS mode.

3. Change to the directory with the DR-DOS files.

4. Type INSTALL Enter.

Installing Caldera DR-DOS from Diskettes

To install Caldera DR-DOS from diskettes you must first create the diskette set. This can be done from the DR-DOS CD-ROM. Follow the instructions provided on the CD-ROM in the file \DISKETTE\DISKCOPY.TXT. The first diskette in the set is a bootable diskette.

Then, to install DR-DOS, do the following:

1. Place the first diskette in drive A: or B:

2. Restart the computer by pressing <Ctrl><Alt><Del>. On a Windows 95 computer, select the option, Restart the computer.

Installing Caldera DR-DOS from a Network Drive

To install Caldera DR-DOS from a network drive, you must first copy all the files from the DRDOS directory of the CD-ROM to the network drive. Use the XCOPY command. Any user who can access this drive, can now install DR-DOS.

On each computer that you want to install DR-DOS on, do the following:

1. Start your computer and log in to the network. If you are runnng Windows 95, restart your computer in MS-DOS mode and log in to the network.

2. Change to the network drive.

3. Type the following to run the install program.

The INSTALL Program

Before the installation process begins, INSTALL scans your computer to obtain information about your existing hardware and software. INSTALL also requires information from you. Enter the information INSTALL requires by selecting from a list of options, or typing it in.

The INSTALL program installs the following components:

Caldera DR-DOS Standard System
Networking System
MS Windows Utilities

Unless you specify otherwise, INSTALL installs the first two components by default and the MS Windows utilities - if it detects Windows 3.x on your computer.

INSTALL calculates how much space is needed for the operating system and for each component, and displays how much space is available on your computer. Unless you have a limited amount of space available, install all the operating system components.

INSTALL uses the information obtained about your computer to create suitable default settings. Accept the default settings for the installation and, if you need to change them, use SETUP after you have installed the operating system.

INSTALL copies the operating system files to the default directories, or to the directories you specify. As the installation progresses, a gauge shows the percentage of the installation completed, and the name of each operating system file is displayed as it is copied.

INSTALL copies the files for the components you selected to install, but does not enable them. You must use SETUP after you have installed the operating system and restarted the computer to enable such features as networking, disk compression, and security.

The installation program for DR-DOS version 7.02 can detect that Windows 95 is installed on your computer and automatically installs the Caldera DR-DOS dual boot program. When your computer is started, you can select which operating system to use.

After Installing

When the installation is complete, INSTALL gives you the options:

To read the README file which contains important information about the operating system.

It is recommended that you read the README file before exiting the INSTALL program. You can then exit INSTALL by selecting one of the other options. (Subsequently, the README file can be read by opening README.TXT in the DRDOS directory.)

To view the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files.

Note:If you have installed DR-DOS on a computer already running Windows 95, INSTALL creates two new files DCONFIG.SYS and AUTODOS7.BAT. These contain your original commands from CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT plus the updates from DR-DOS. The original system files remain on your computer unedited.

If you select Windows 95 when you start your computer, the original CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files are executed, but if you select DR-DOS and Windows 95, replace these with AUTODOS7.BAT and DCONFIG.SYS.

To discard changes made to these files.

To restart your computer to run Caldera DR-DOS.

Use SETUP to change the default settings for your system, or to install additional DR-DOS features, such as multitasking and system security. You must restart your machine so that it is running DR-DOS before you can use SETUP. Refer to Chapter 9, "Configuring the System" for detailed information on how to use SETUP.

Read Chapter 4, "Working with Caldera DR-DOS" if you are not an experienced DOS user. If you are an experienced computer user, refer to Chapter 8, "Command Reference" to learn more about this operating system.

Copying the System Diskettes (DISKCOPY)

If you installed from a diskette set, it is a good idea to make copies of your system diskettes before going any further. Use the DISKCOPY command to do this. Refer to Chapter 4, "Working with DR-DOS" for information about diskettes and commands.

You will need as many blank diskettes as you have system diskettes, and the blank diskettes must all be the same type. DISKCOPY detects whether or not the blank diskettes have been formatted, and if not, formats them before copying. You can also use the FORMAT command to format a diskette.

Type the following command at the system prompt if your machine has a hard disk, and follow the instructions given:

DISKCOPY A: A: <Enter>

If you have a twin-diskette drive system where both diskette drives are the same format, type the following instead:

DISKCOPY A: B: <Enter>

Note: Remember to label the diskettes in the same way that the originals are labelled, so that if you need to use any of the copies you can find the diskette you need easily.
